چکیده

1 Variations in power input to the ocean using a recent global “reanalysis” extending back 2 to 1871 shows a strong trend in the net power input since then, a trend dominated by 3 the Southern Ocean region. This trend is interpreted as a spurious result of the changing 4 observational system. Focussing therefore, on the North Atlantic, where the data base is 5 somewhat more secure, the input power in the subpolar North Atlantic varies significantly in 6 time, showing a strong relationship to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). During positive 7 NAO index years, power input is greater owing to enhanced synoptic activity. Furthermore, 8 cumulative power input to the subpolar North Atlantic is found to correlate significantly 9 with both the eddy kinetic energy there and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, although 10 the physical mechanism at work remains unclear. The assumption that the changing ocean 11 can be neglected relative to the changing atmosphere in calculating the power input is found 12 to be a usefully accurate approximation over the two decades for which changing ocean state 13 estimates are available. Strong dependence on synoptic weather systems of monthly average 14 stress distributions implies that paleo and future climate simulations must account properly 15 for changes in weather systems, not just the large-scale variations. 16

Enhanced Atlantic subpolar gyre variability through baroclinic threshold in a coarse resolution model

Direct observations, satellite measurements and paleo records reveal strong variability in the Atlantic subpolar gyre on various time scales. Here we show that variations of comparable amplitude can only be simulated in a coupled climate model in the proximity of a dynamical threshold. The threshold and the associated dynamic response is due to a positive feedback involving increased salt trans...

Mechanisms of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation variability simulated by the NEMO model

We have investigated mechanisms for the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) variability at 26.5 N (other than the Ekman component) that can be related to external forcings, in particular wind variability. Resolution dependence is studied using identical experiments with 1 and 1/4 NEMO model runs over 1960–2010. The analysis shows that much of the variability in the AMOC at 26 N c...

Low-Frequency Variability in Shallow-Water Models of the Wind-Driven Ocean Circulation. Part II: Time-Dependent Solutions*

The time-dependent wind-driven ocean circulation is investigated for both a rectangular and a North Atlantic– shaped basin. Multiple steady states in a 21⁄2-layer shallow-water model and their dependence on various parameters and other model properties were studied in Part I for the rectangular basin. As the wind stress on the rectangular basin is increased, each steady-state branch is destabil...

Surface Flux Variability over the North Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans

Daily fields obtained from a 17-yr atmospheric GCM simulation are used to study the surface sensible and latent heat flux variability and its relationship to the sea level pressure (SLP) field. The fluxes are analyzed over the North Pacific and Atlantic Oceans during winter. The leading mode of interannual SLP variability consists of a single center associated with the Aleutian low in the Pacif...

This study investigates the contributions of Atlantic Ocean to June-August rainfall over Uganda and western Kenya (KU). The study has utilized the datasets including precipitation from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre, North Atlantic Oscillation Index (NAOI), South Atlantic Ocean Dipole Index (SAODI), ERA-interim reanalysis, and the Atlantic Ocean Sea Surface Temperature (SST). Singu...
